Hammer How-To #3: 3D Skybox

The 3D Skybox is used to give the illusion of a map being larger than it is. They take a tiny area outside the map full of scenery and scale it up sixteen times, then project it around the map – but to know where to put this scaled-up scenery, they need to know where the origin point (0,0,0) of the map is, so we add a sky_camera as a reference point for the origin.
TIP: You can find brilliant one-sixteenth-scale scenery models by creating a prop_static, opening the model browser from the World Model parameter and searching for “skybox”!

  1. Hi i dont know if youll read this but, i have a problem that when i make a simple box, make it hollow and put it around my map to turn it into a skybox when i test it the skybox its black what could cause it to appear all black?
    Is it because im using a skybox from other source game rather than gmod?

  2. i know this video is kinda old, but like im having an issue where i can see my own map within the 3d skybox.

Can't surround my map with the 3d texture and be lazy anymore since it's getting so big, won't even compile, tried to do this and might have to delete my entire campaign and retry because this hurts my brain. Seemed alright before but now the skybox is causing problems all the sudden, also my water is clear and allows you to see through walls. This is insane.

  4. Can you create more than one skybox per map? I want to see if i can use skyboxes to create doorways that work like portals.

  6. I do not know the skybox texture name for the HL2 level, "DARK ENERGY" I searched the sky list but I can't find it

  7. Hey, I love your videos, they help a lot, but I'm using Portal 2 hammer editor. Is there any way I can import Half-life files in so I can use the textures? Cuz the sky textures for Portal 2 suck. Thanks!

  9. so I am trying to create a sniping map wich is quite large would just creating 5 surfaces including ceiling be good enough for a sky box?
