Game Development Time Lapse – 7 days in 18 Minutes – The first GOL Linux Game Jam

Here’s the GamingOnLinux Game Jam page:

Let me know what you think after trying it. Give me the good and the bad, I want to improve!

I developed this using the experimental Linux build of Unity3D. I definitely encountered a lot of bugs (can’t bake Lightmaps without crashing Unity, RenderSettings not obeying script commands).

All this development and testing happened on Mesa 11.1 drivers with my R9 390 card on Ubuntu 15.10. Thankfully everything went ok.

I used a lot of other cool software as well such as Blender, Krita and GIMP.

This was my first game jam, and I do recognise the game has bugs and is a lot less polished than it could be. It was a fun experience, I pushed myself to try newer parts of Unity that I was previously unfamiliar with.

I am not an artist, thus if the game seems to lack a design theme or art style, well now you know why!

I honestly feel I could have achieved a far greater gameplay experience if only I had a team. Alas, the world is the way it is.

  1. 3 years ago, I watched this video and I was like. Damn how do they understand and remember all this? I wanna learn to do that too (5th grade in Europe Bulgaria I was 11 – 12)

  2. How long would you estimate it would take a first timer to create their first game. A relatively simple game that would be realistic in scope for a newbie?

  3. I am currently expecting more news from Unity, Unreal, and Unigine as these are three engines that support creating games for Linux.
As a matter of opinion I did not find the Epicgames Linux game store very interesting, to have the Epicgames store you need Wine outside the games I did not find anything interesting to say native games as there are many in the Valve Steam Store.

  4. I’m honestly thinking of taking coding classes in college, or maybe online, I’m too anti-social to actually want to go to college. It’s just a wreck there anyways.

  5. Requiring video game music or your game? i make tracks for indie developers at 30 bucks a pack opf 30 songs differt moods and normal stage situations like cave, space, forest, adventure etc. If you need just answer this message, we must support each other if we want to grow.
